Cairo for first-time visitors: how to plan your days

Cairo rewards curiosity, but its scale and traffic can make an unplanned visit tiring. The easiest approach is to group nearby sights, leave room for travel time and decide whether you want ancient monuments, historic neighbourhoods, museums or food to shape each day. This guide helps you build a realistic first itinerary.

Opening hours, admission, traffic and availability can change. Check current site information and confirm tour, pickup and ticket inclusions for your date.

Place notes

Plan Cairo by area, not by checklist

Giza’s pyramids and the Sphinx sit west of the Nile, while central Cairo and many historic districts are across the river. Treating them as separate area visits cuts down on criss-crossing the city. Give the Giza Plateau a dedicated half or full day, then choose another day for central museums and a third for a historic walk through Islamic Cairo and Khan el-Khalili. Opening hours, crowd levels and heat affect how much fits; check current details and avoid stacking too many timed stops.

Small discoveries

Choose the museum that fits your interests

Cairo’s museum options tell different stories. The Grand Egyptian Museum stands near Giza and pairs naturally with the pyramids; the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square is in central Cairo; and the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Fustat is known for its royal mummies collection. Check which museum is open, what galleries are accessible and whether a combined tour includes admission before you set the day’s route. For a first visit, one museum done well usually works better than trying to see them all in a single day.

Plan your next trip

Leave time for traffic, meals and recovery

Use a local driver, a guided pickup or a mix of transport that suits your route, and confirm the pickup address and return arrangements before setting off. Travel times vary considerably with traffic, so build in buffers and avoid relying on a tight connection after a long sightseeing day. Take water, sun protection and comfortable shoes; dress respectfully when visiting religious sites and check any site-specific entry rules. For evenings, a Nile dinner cruise or a food walk can be a change of pace, but book and confirm logistics in advance.
