Luxor and Aswan: how to plan a Nile and temple trip

Luxor and Aswan make a memorable Upper Egypt trip, but trying to squeeze every temple into a few rushed days can make the journey feel like a checklist. A better plan gives Luxor time for both banks, leaves space for Aswan’s river scenery and island sites, and treats the journey between them as part of the experience. You can travel by Nile cruise, train, road or domestic flight; compare the time and stops each option offers.

Cruise schedules, site access, tickets, transport and tour inclusions vary by operator and date. Confirm the current itinerary and final arrangements before booking.

Place notes

Give each city its own pace

In Luxor, group East Bank sights such as Karnak and Luxor Temple together, then reserve a separate day for West Bank visits including the Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut Temple. Crossing the Nile and reaching sites takes time, and entry arrangements can vary, so check current opening details and ticket requirements before setting the schedule. In Aswan, consider Philae Temple, which is reached by boat, and leave time for the riverfront, local markets or a felucca ride. A five- to six-day outline can allow two or three nights in each city, depending on your transport choice and whether you add Abu Simbel.

Small discoveries

Choose between a cruise and independent travel

A Nile cruise turns the connection between Luxor and Aswan into part of the trip, with some itineraries stopping at temples along the river. The official Egypt tourism guide says many cruises between the cities take around four to five days, but schedules, included visits and sailing direction differ by operator. Traveling independently gives you more control over overnight stays and the order of visits; Egypt’s official tourism information lists trains, flights and buses as intercity options. Confirm actual dates, departure points, luggage rules and what is included before choosing. Do not assume a cruise’s shore visits or entrance tickets are included unless the itinerary says so.

Plan your next trip

Plan the practical details before you book

Decide whether Abu Simbel is a priority: it is a separate excursion from Aswan and adds a long day or overnight to the plan. Compare the exact transport arrangement, start time, return time, guide, admission and meals. For temples and museums, check the official ticket portal and current access information, as site rules can change. Pack sun protection, water and comfortable shoes, and leave room for heat and travel delays. Journeyfer has separate city, tour and transfer pages for Luxor and Aswan, plus an Abu Simbel trip from Aswan; use them to compare options and confirm final details for your dates.
